On Tuesday night (July 10, 2025), the team was contacted by Lancashire Police to assist with a person who had become lost on Pendle Hill.
The casualty had been out looking for a lost dog and found themselves misplaced, so they sensibly called for assistance. Don’t panic, the dog was found safe and well!
Anyway, the police passed the call onto us and had advised them to stay where they were, on the steep side above Ogden Clough.
Team members were called out to assist and made their way to Barley, where parties went on foot up the clough, as well as our ATV, making its way over the tops towards the trig to carefully find its way back down to the casualty’s location.
As time went on, we remained in contact and advised that the team was on their way. However, as team members arrived at their location, a call to the casualty informed us that Lancs police had also (unknown to us) deployed onto the hillside and had begun to walk the casualty off in the opposite direction.
Once confirmed via the officers with the casualty, their location and that they had safely navigated down and climbed back up the opposite side of Ogden Clough, the team began to withdraw from the hillside. Waiting on the final confirmation from the police that they were also off the hill and the casualty was safely back on the tarmac.
At this point, the team stood down, returned the vehicle to base to be washed and sorted, ready for whenever we may be called next.
We hope the casualty was not too embarrassed by the ordeal, and for what can be seen as a simple walk, can soon become disconcerting as it gets dark (they were prepared with a torch) and low cloud coming in. We thank them for the patience and following the request to stay at their location until someone was with them and as reported, were also glad to hear the dog was found safe and well too
